Taking Care of Yourself After a Spouse Dies

When a spouse dies, your whole world is turned upside down. You do not sleep well, you do not feel like eating and probably feel like cocooning yourself and being alone. These are all perfertly normal feelings.

But, you must take care of yourself, so you will be able to go on with life. Eating is very important. Even though you may not feel hungry, you must eat nourishing meals on a regular basis. Your immune system is already compromised from your grief and not eating, will affect it even further.

Eating several small meals a day will be easier at first. Yogurt is a miracle food; makes you feel satisfied, is easy to swallow and very nourshing. Soups are another food that are easy to eat. Comfort foods are also great. Stop at the Deli in your grocery store and pick up some of your favorites, if you do not feel like cooking.

For those of you not sleeping well, at least try. If you cannot fall asleep, put some soft music on and lie there resting. You might surprise yourself and fall asleep. In time more sleep will come.

If you are on medications on a regular basis, make sure to continue taking them and keep appointments with your Doctor. He/She may also be able to offer you some suggestions.

Above all else, try to maintain a positive outlook on life; you need to go on living. Get back to your normal routine as soon as you feel comfortable doing so. See family and friends and get out of the house. I used to go to the grocery store, and walk slowly up and down each isle, not always buying anything, but looking for a friendly face to just exchange a smile with. It does help.
