Cancer is a scary disease, yet many people overcome it everyday. Many have suffered through cancer of some sort, and now their disease is in remission. However, there are some that suffer more.
Metastatic disease is when cancer cells from one part of the body get into the blood stream or the lymphatic system and travel to another. This is during the last stages of cancer, and hopefully, the disease is found before this happens. The main places for “Mets” to occur is the lungs, liver, bones or brain. Many times, cancer starts somewhere like the breast. After awhile, the cancer cells attach and attack proteins and travel to another part. However, they need to find a place that is like the first place they attacked. So, what started out as breast cancer, can move to the lungs, for they are similar. There isn't always symptoms, but many feel pain, have trouble breathing, or have yellowing of the skin. There are also other symptoms, and it does depend on where the cells attack. Metastatic cells aren't always found right away. It can be months or years later.
There are ways to combat this, but the sooner the cancers are found, the better. Often, therapies or surgery works. This depends on the person's health and the size of the tumor. One thing that can help the patient is to be as healthy as he or she can be. A positive outlook can help, and many find help through support groups. These people understand what you're going through, for they are there too or have done it. There are new treatments being tested on patients everyday, so hopefully, cancer will just be a word, not a deadly disease.
