Radiation Treatments

Cancer is a very common word to hear these days, as people are diagnosed with different types daily. As you probably are aware, many patients undergo radiation therapy to help cure them of it, help to shrink a tumor’s size which can reduce pain, and help to make life a bit more tolerable. It is a part of the treatment for about two-thirds of cancer patients. By working well with your physician, much of the anxiety can be curbed as the treatment plan is put into place. It can be very effective in curing some types of cancer.

A radiation oncologist would be working with your regular physician in directing a course of treatment to zero in on specific cancerous tumors within your body. The objective is to damage the cancer cells within the tumor and reduce their ability of reproduce. This material is eliminated from the body while the normal cells work to repair themselves. As much as possible, the non-cancerous areas around the tumor are shielded, but some normal cells do get affected. The radiation treatments are spread out over time in order to allow the normal cells to recover and strengthen. At the same time, any cancer cells that may have been resistive to the radiation will have been weakened by the first treatment and the next dose will do more damage to the cancerous cells, leading toward total elimination.

There are a number of different types of radiation therapies and a number of different side effects. Your oncologist will work closely with each patient to ensure an understanding of the expectations and how to deal with anticipated side effects. A patient should never be afraid to discuss their concerns with any of their treatment staff. If you or someone you love is undergoing radiation therapy, remember to remain positive and hopeful most of all.
