Information on Radiation Treatments

Unfortunately, many people live with cancer. It is a battle that no one wants to have to go through, but with the growing rate of cancer today, many people are battling it. There are many different types of cancers today, and many different types of treatment, one of which is radiation. Many types of cancer call upon the use of radiation to treat the cancer. It is a powerful treatment that does have its drawbacks, but with the success rate it produces, it can also produce a high rate of treatment and cures.

Radiation treatment for cancer has been used for many years. It is a form of treatment that is most commonly used for breast cancer, but it also has been used for other types as well. Radiation uses a machine that is placed over the infected area. After careful measurement, the machine lets out a beam of radiation to hit the exact spot of the tumor. It is like getting an X-ray, which is non-painful, though the after effects of radiation can be devastating. Also the amount of radiation is much greater than a regular X-ray. There are some side effects with radiation that can be uncomfortable. There can be hair loss, fatigue, skin irritation around the radiated site, more cancer can grow, or it could even result in death. However, there is usually a good outcome with the use of radiation, which is why many oncologists choose to continue to use radiation as a form of treatment. The type of cancer determines whether or not radiation is the right treatment.

Deciding on radiation is a decision made between the doctor and the patient. The more informed the patient is about radiation, the better the decision process will be.
