Radiation Treatments

Radiation therapy is also referred to as radiotherapy, X-ray therapy, or irradiation, which means using a certain type of energy (ionizing radiation). This is used to kill cancer cells and shrink tumors. Radiation therapy decimates the cells surrounding the treatment area, known as the target tissue. Using this method, damage is done to the genetic material, so there will be no way for the cells to continue to grow and divide. Even though radiation does damage to cancer cells and normal cells, the majority of normal cells will recover after radiation and function properly.

Radiation therapy is most often applied to the cancerous tumor. The fields of radiation might also include the draining of lymph nodes which are clinically or radiologically meshed with the tumor and of great risk of sub-clinical malignant spread. It is essential to involve the margin of normal tissue surrounding the tumor to be sure of the uncertainties in daily set up with internal tumor motion. The uncertainties could be brought on by internal movement, such as taking a breath or the bladder filling, with the external movement of skin marks in comparison to the tumor position.

Radiation therapy does have its side effects. Radiation therapy is a localized treatment. Side effects most often are confined to the area of treatment. To help yourself through this time, take extra special care of yourself to strengthen your health during the treatments. Fatigue is another problem, so take naps as often as your body needs. Be aware of your emotions and try to stay on a level of calmness so your body can recover and be whole again.
