Radiation treatments have been used for years. The most common use for radiation therapy is for cancer treatment. Radiation is used to kill malignant cancer cells in the body and help the body in reducing and relieving the body of any tumors. Radiation treatments are usually used along side of many other treatments.
Radiation treatments are most commonly used in treating cancerous tumors. Radiation treatments damages or kills the cells by ruining the cells’ genetic material. This makes it so those cancerous cells can't continue to grow and make more of themselves. The radiation is applied to the specific tumor area in helping rid the body of the cancer all together. The most common places that radiation therapy is used is internally in the stomach, breast, prostate, uterus, cervix and pancreas.
There are many different kinds of radiation treatments. Some radiation therapy is done very carefully and applied to a very small area, making sure that surrounding organs or tissues are not damaged beyond repair. This type of radiation penetrates deeply and is very dangerous if not done correctly. Other types of radiation that are not as strong are used for larger areas that won't damage organs and tissues as much.
Radiation therapy is not very pleasant to endure, but it does help lessen and prevent more cancer from occurring in the body. Radiation treatments have helped thousands of people with cancer every year. More and more studies are being done to find even better ways of administering radiation treatments to cancer patients.
