How to Cope With a Sick Pet

If you consider your pet a part of the family, then them becoming ill would be just as hard on you as if your spouse or child fell ill. Animals provide emotional support, companionship, and unending love for their caregivers. This is a bond that exists between humans and animals.

The first step to coping is to know its okay to grieve for your pets illness. Knowing what kind of help you need will help narrow your search in support from outside the home. Sometimes the illness is too much for the pet to be cared for at home and they are required to stay at the vet. If you have children, try to not let them see you lose your composer, because they may not understand. Just keep reassuring them the pet will be alright, even if you're unsure yourself. Pray for your pet with your family; it will bring some comfort.

Some other things that might help with coping would be listening to music, creating your own art work, writing a poem, or going for a walk or a run. Spending time with support groups sharing with others that have experienced the same can help you in your time of need. Remember the fun times you shared with your beloved pet and do not dwell on the present illness. Most of all, spend the best quality time you can with your pet, providing much love and comfort. Treat them how you would like to be treated.
