Dealing With Ill Pets

When your pet gets ill, it is a hard time for you and the family. Children especially, may feel that something is wrong and they can get upset. You know your pet better than anyone else, so when you start to see different behaviors and energy levels, check with your veterinarian. Your pet should have a complete evaluation and check up. If you have seen the same vet for years, then they will have all the past records for a thorough comparison of weights and certain levels in the blood. They most likely will take a stool sample also as that can recognize parasites.

If you pet is ill, and you are waiting for the test results, make notes for your vet about their behavior at home. You should note how long they sleep and their general level of contentment. Are they restless a lot and have problems sleeping or getting comfortable? Eating, vomiting, urination and deification are all important aspects to pay close attention to.

If the illness appears to be terminal, there are emotional aspects to deal with. Children need an explanation about what is going on with their pet, too. Just because they are little doesn't mean that they are not aware of a problem. Talk to family and friends for support. Your pet is like a member of the family and when an illness has your pet feeling poorly, it is upsetting to you and you are the one that has to deal with it. You need to understand that you and your vet are doing everything possible to make your pet better. Just do the best that you can.
