Chemotherapy Support

A person who is going through chemotherapy, and the stress and pain associated with it, is going to be experiencing things that only they, along with other patients and survivors, will be able to understand. It is important that friends and loved ones allow the patient the freedom they need to look for support and friends outside of their care. There may also be issues and situations that patients may not feel comfortable talking about with anyone but other patients and survivors.

One of the most basic ways to provide support for someone going through chemotherapy is to simply lend an ear to listen and a shoulder to lean on. You can drive the patient to their chemo treatments and appointments. You can even cook and clean for them, or do some shopping, care for pets, and water their plants. Be sure to check in on them from time to time. Some patients may be too fatigued or overwhelmed at the time, or perhaps to proud, to ask for help. So be sure to make it clear that you are there for them - no matter what!

Another important part of providing support for patients going through chemotherapy is to be strong enough to ask the patient's doctor the tough and hard questions. Another equally important part of chemotherapy support is to be aware of the patient's boundaries and privacy. You don't want to overstep your boundaries and embarrass them, or make the patient uncomfortable in any way. An equally important aspect of providing support and help to someone going through chemotherapy is to make sure that you are taking care of yourself as well, and getting enough rest and fuel for your day. If you are strong and capable you will be better equipped to help your loved one through their ordeal.
