A marriage is one of the strongest bonds you can have with someone. Your spouse will be your support network for your whole lives together. When the trials and tribulations come, as they inevitably do, with the help of your spouse you will be stronger then ever. Marriage vows are put to the ultimate test when illness strikes. Although it can be a struggle to care for someone who is sick, the bonds of marriage mean that you must do everything in your power to help your spouse recover from any maladies they may suffer.
It is important to learn to tolerate any negativity that may be expressed by the sick spouse, because after all, they are sick. At the same time, try to turn the tables and make them happy whenever possible. Give them their time alone but never ignore a sick spouse if they need attention. Spend time with them whenever they need support and let your spouse know that you still enjoy their company. Encourage your loved one often and don't let their sickness adversely affect your relationship with one another.
One thing to keep in mind is to not dwell on the illness. They know they are sick, and so they don't need to be reminded all the time of their situation. Be positive at all times and let them see the joy in life, and in most cases, the sickness will be forgotten when you are together. Coping with a spouse's illness is difficult, but approach the situation as if you were the ill spouse, and treat them the way you would want to be treated.
