Dealing with Ill Pets

Every family could use a pet, as pets provide affection and companionship. When your pet gets sick though, you need to know what to do. The first thing you should do is take your pet to the veterinarian. There, the pet doctor will decide what kind of treatment is needed. Often your pet can be cared for at home, but it really depends on what kind of illness they have.

If you care for your pet at home you will need some type of thick bedding that will draw moisture away from your pet. If the pet doctor has prescribed tablets for your pet, you must learn how to give those to the pet. You might want to ask the veterinarian to demonstrate how to give the tablets to your pet. More than likely he will show you how to put the tablets at the back of the tongue, instead of just putting them in their food. This will be the case especially if the pet is nauseated.

You will want to make sure the pet has easy access to water and food. Keep the area clean and if you need to you can sanitize it with Clorox or disinfectant, usually diluted with water. Always wash your hands before and after handling your pet. If your pet is unable to walk, you can make a makeshift stretcher from a large towel, but it will take two or more people to help move the animal.

There are certain breeds of animals that are more susceptible to certain health problems. Usually a small toy breed will have health issues with heart complications and some with orthopedic problems. It would be a good idea to check out a pet’s breed and know some of the health problems associated with that particular breed.
