Coping With the Illness Of a Spouse

Supporting a spouse who is seriously ill is very hard. Many things change. The life the patient lived before the illness will not be the same. However, the love you feel for your spouse can help support them and carry them through. There are many factors that have to be readjusted so that the spouse may focus on recovery, so be willing to adjust to their needs.
Naturally, the ill spouse may be afraid, frustrated or angry.

He or she may lash out or become depressed or withdrawn. The caregiver needs to reflect patience, kindness, understanding and support for the ill spouse. Finding a support group or having the patient keep a journal or diary to record thoughts also reduces stress. In addition, the caregiver should not try to handle everything alone. Hiring a home health agency or hospice will provide the needed help with the ill spouse. If possible, taking your spouse on a walk outside greatly reduces stress and can give them a new perspective. Try to reincorporate favorite activities from before the illness if possible.

Life will become different for the whole family but working toward a normal life and routine is crucial. Together, the both of you can commit to overcoming grief and living life to the fullest extent possible together. This may seem as difficult as climbing a mountain, but through strength and love, you can keep the bond between you strong and prevent illness from controlling your life together.
