Anyone who plans on living alone or caring for someone else should learn how to cook. The degree to which you are able to cook depends largely on what your goal is when cooking. Are you cooking just because you need to eat or do you enjoy making delicious meals for yourself and others? No matter how good a cook you want to end up being, everyone needs to start from the same place.
You need to begin by learning some of the basic terminology. Some helpful words to know are beat, fold, cut in, knead and cream. These are all different ways of combining ingredients. If a recipe calls for folding and you beat the ingredients instead, the dish will not turn out right. It is important to know the difference between a simmer and rolling boil as well. Simmering is heating a meal over low heat, where bubbles are small and slow. A rolling boil is when the bubbles are large and continually break the surface of the liquid. Most cookbooks contain a terminology section within them to help you.
Beginning cooks should start with recipes that have few ingredients and are straightforward. When you find a recipe you are interested in, read it in its entirety before starting to cook so you know the basic flow of the recipe and have all the necessary items beforehand. Follow the recipes exactly until you have the hang of things. Once you are comfortable with simple recipes, move on to some more complicated recipes or begin tweaking recipes to create your own. Just remember that you will not be able to prepare every recipe picture perfect every time, so have fun and enjoy the process.
