Support for Radiation Therapy

When supporting a patient undergoing radiation therapy, you should understand the side effects so you are prepared to help in various ways. The side effects can be short term and may appear during the treatments or shortly after. The side effects can also develop years after the radiation treatment is finished. However, with proper care and support, you can help minimize or prevent many of these side effects in the person you are caring for.

One of the short term side effects is irritation to the esophagus and airways, making it hard to swallow. You can help your patient by having them gargle a solution of salt and water or you can buy a mouth wash called Prevention. It is an over the counter mouth rinse for oncology patients. Fatigue is another side effect, so try to get your patient to nap or do some light exercise.

A loss of hair and memory are very common side effects, but they usually return soon after the treatment is over. Diarrhea can be a problem, so see that the patient receiving the treatment avoids high fiber foods, fatty foods and caffeine. Also, make sure that they eat small meals often.

Eating a nutritious diet is a must, as the patient must keep their weight up to support the immune system. Their taste buds are affected by the treatment and things will not taste the same. However, you can provide great comfort and show them you care by helping them try different foods they can eat and find new favorites. They should have a lot of protein to balance the carbohydrates they will be more likely to eat. Your support and encouragement will foster an environment of healing and recovery that will be greatly appreciated.
