Low Fat Cooking Tips

When trying to eat low fat you should start by buying lean cuts of meat and poultry as they are good sources of needed protein. The leanest part of the chicken and turkey is the white meat without the skin. The leanest cuts of beef are sirloin, tenderloin, chuck and round steak. For pork it is tenderloin and loin chops.

When you are buying hamburger you want to get the packages that say at least 90% lean. You can also buy ground turkey and chicken, but be aware that these may contain portions of fattier meat as well. When looking at the meat, look at the pieces and pick the pieces with the least amount of marbled fat. You should look for the packages that say choice or select.

When getting ready to cook your meat, cut off any fat that you can see. This also means getting the skin off the chicken. When you cook a whole chicken or turkey you cook it with the skin on, but you have to take the skin and the fat that is underneath the skin off after cooking.

Grilling, baking, roasting, and broiling are the best ways to prepare low fat food. Taking smaller portions also helps cut the fat intake. To help, 3 oz of meat is about the size of a deck of cards and 3 oz of chicken is about 1/2 the size of the breast. There are many other things you can do to reduce fat.
