Everyone needs love and support from those around them, especially those with cancer or any other illness. It is an important part of their recovery. Because the patient is weakened from the cancer and possibly surgery before treatments begin, they need support at home for help in obtaining meals, etc., as well as help getting to and from treatments, because most of the treatments are done on an outpatient basis.
Since radiation destroys good cells as well as bad cells, the patient is weakened from the treatments until the good cells have time to grow back. There are also side effects. Patients have to deal with anger, depression, anxiety, fear, hopelessness, and feelings of isolation, which can sometimes lead to suicide. By giving them a sounding board for their feelings and assuring them of your presence and help, you will reduce their concerns and loneliness.
Just because people are sick doesn't mean their everyday requirements for living go away. If they are unable to pay their bills, shop for necessities, clean their home, or cook their meals, they get more depressed and angry. By helping them, you can add a little sunshine to their life. Some may even require nursing at home. Even if you don’t want to do these things, sitting with the patient while their partner does it helps.
Remember, not everyone will ask for help, so if they are your friend, be a friend back and offer to do what you can or if you have to, just go over and do it quietly. You may need someone’s help yourself one day.
