When a person faces radiation treatments for their cancer, they wonder what it will be like. They will wonder what the side effects will be, if it will hurt, and how it is done. Radiation therapy is the treatment of disease, primarily cancer, by using penetrating beams of high energy waves made of particles called radiation.
Radiation therapy is very effective because it can be focused on a precise area without damaging the surrounding tissue. However, it is not without difficulty. Those going through radiation therapy become weak physically, so if someone you know is going through radiation, be sure to be there for them. Make it known that you are there to help them do whatever they feel they cannot do on their own. This may be embarrassing for some radiation patients, so be sure not to be patronizing; simply let them know you are there to help if they need it.
Also, radiation patients may be fearful for their health. Cancer is a scary disease, but can be less of a burden if the patient is surrounded by loved ones that support them physically and emotionally. Be sure that you fully support loved ones going through this treatment. Be positive when you are around them, and try to lift their spirits. Let them know that they will be fine, and do whatever you can to give them hope. Hope and positive energy are key in the fight against cancer, as well as radiation therapy.
