Radiation Therapy

Radiation therapy is a treatment used to control malignant cells in cancer patients. It is the medical use of ionizing radiation and is used in curative and palliative cancer treatment. Radiation therapy is successful where therapy has a survival benefit, as well as in cases where symptomatic relief is the goal.  Side affects can be minimal to extreme, and patients require much physical and emotional support during this time.

Although the therapy is painless, higher doses of radiation can cause varying acute side affects. Skin surfaces are damaged and become pink and sore early into treatment. It also may break down. Recovery is quick, but it is very uncomfortable, and patients are often sick and face physical and emotional aspects of the therapy through its duration and beyond. If someone you love is undergoing radiation therapy it is important to be there for them physically. They may be feeling weak and require assistance preparing meals, and performing daily tasks.

Radiation therapy is very scary for a lot of people. The uncertainty of treatment coupled with the physical demands can make many patients feel week emotionally as well. It is important to let the patient know that you are there for them, and continue to be positive during this time. It is important to give the patient in your life extra love and support. A simple hug, or holding hands goes a long way in the life of a cancer patient. It is extremely important that they know there is hope, and that they WILL get better. This kind of encouragement and positive thinking, coupled with radiation therapy can work miracles in the life of a cancer patient.
