Support for Prostate Cancer

Support for prostate cancer for men is vitally important to those who have the illness. There are support groups of men with prostate cancer that foster a caring amongst themselves and a feeling of sharing and belonging. The cancer patient has many questions like, why me? How long will I live? In general, they do not know the future of their lives or the quality of it.

The prostate gland is a small, nut sized organ that passes urine from the bladder to the urethra in order to urinate. When the gland becomes swollen, it restricts the flow of urine to the urethra or stops altogether. This can happen because of an infection, or as the result of a tumor. The tumor form is prostate cancer.

Every week they meet and they share information about diet, any new rumors of breakthroughs, or possibly a new procedure that is being preformed. Groups can be found all over the world. Some examples of support groups are the American Cancer Society Man-to-Man program and the Malecare group, which is a non-profit organization that has patients as well as doctors. Finally, the US Too! International group is also a non-profit organization that describes treatments, defines medical terms, and provides online information.

Prostate cancer was a subject that men did not want to readily discuss in the past. When Senator Bob Dole went public with his prostate cancer and erectile dysfunction, it encouraged other men to speak up about their condition, find out more about it, and seek treatment.
