Grieving the loss of someone close to you is probably the most difficult thing anyone will be required to do. Facing the reality of life without that person may seem impossible to do, but allowing oneself the time and ability to grieve will allow you to reach that point.
There are many books, articles, and websites which deal with the grieving process and the steps that are usually required to deal with the loss one is experiencing. There are also self-help groups and bereavement counseling available for those who do not wish to go through the grieving process alone. Some people will find that they cannot handle being in a group and may need to have individual counseling.
Quite often, for those who are grieving, depression sets in along with the feeling that life is no longer worth living. If this becomes a prolonged situation, professional help will be very important to help you combat the depression. Medication may be prescribed to assist in coping with the life changes that result from the death of a loved one. It is important to be honest with yourself and your doctor regarding the feelings you are experiencing.
Some people seem to be able to accept their personal loss better than others and are able to move forward quickly. However, it is normal for this process to take a year or more. A year may seem like an eternity while going through the various stages of grief, but as time continues to flow by, feelings and emotions will stabilize bit by bit. Allowing yourself the freedom to express your feelings to others who understand can be a great comfort. Attending self-help groups or bereavement counseling will give you the proper forum for this freedom of expression. Utilizing the things that help you is what is important.
