Radiation Therapy

Radiation therapy has been around for many years, and is used to treat certain types of cancer. It can be a scary time for someone who has been diagnosed with cancer, and is about to receive radiation therapy. It is important that they are surrounded by people who love and support them.

The amount of radiation therapy a person receives depends on the type and stage of cancer. Like most medications, radiation therapy is spread out over time.  In certain types of cancer, a patient gets two treatments a day. Radiation therapy is a long process that requires a lot of the patient physically and mentally.

Like most medications, there are side effects to radiation therapy, and it is hard on the body. People going through radiation therapy require a lot of physical and mental support. Physically, radiation therapy can make a person feel very weak, and it is helpful to do what you can for the patient physically. Mentally, people undergoing radiation therapy may feel scared and worried, so it is important to support them emotionally. Sometimes a simple hand holding, or a reminder of the positive things in life is all it takes to make a person undergoing treatment feel better. It is important to remain as positive as possible so the patient feels better emotionally. One of the most important things to remember to help someone undergoing radiation therapy is to be hopeful. Hope and positive thinking are essential in the healing and radiation process.
