Make Your Food Healthier

Because we all tend to eat things on the run, or choose to cook the way we “always have”, it showing in studies that these habits are also harmful to our health.  Actually, the more you cook, the better.  That means you are eating less from a can, or less from the “take out”.  However, we forget that a lot of what we cook now is less health than before, mainly because of preservatives or what growers fed animals to make them grow bigger quicker.  The results of that creates a lot of “added” features in our foods that we should not be eating on a regular basis.

For example, beef, poultry, and pork products that we buy may look lean enough in the package; however, because of what they were fed before they became products, these meats are often full of extra fats and additives that would not have been there years ago.

To lessen some of the intake of those “extra features”, you can try cutting down on the amount of beef, and yet adding nutrition, just by substituting a cup of lightly sautéed, finely grated potato or carrot in exchange for a quarter of pound of beef.  This will make healthier burgers or meatloaf.  When making a meatloaf, use ground round.  It is a medium grade beef with less fat than regular ground beef, but enough fat so that your meatloaf doesn’t get dry.

Another great way to cut down on meat consumption is to use pasta, rice, or lentils when making soups or casseroles.  They are high in protein, little to no fats, and are economical.
