Prostate Cancer

Prostate cancer is a type of glandular cancer found among aged men (above 50) wherein malignant tumor develops in the prostate gland of the reproductive system. The common symptoms of such a form of cancer are frequent urination, painful ejaculation, painful urination, increased urination at night and blood in the urine. Prostate cancer could spread to other parts of the body such as the rectum, bones, lymph nodes and bladder. Prostate cancer is usually caused due to a diet high in saturated fat, smoking, sedentary lifestyle and also exposure to heavy metals. It is the second leading cause of death due to cancer among the US men.

It is usually diagnosed using techniques such as DRE(Digital rectal Examination), transrectal ultrasound techniques, PSA and PAP tests, tumor biopsy and computer tomography. Once diagnosed, it could be treated using medical, radiation, surgical or natural treatments.

The choice of treatment depends on the size or extent of the tumor and also on the age and health of the patient. Under medical treatment, hormonal therapy is used wherein drugs are ministered unto the patient to block the production of testosterone that multiply the tumor cells. Radiation treatments are common and very effective, and such treatments use radiations to control cancer. Surgical treatments are employed when the patient has good health and is in the early stages of cancer when the tumor has not spread to the bones. Natural treatments basically involves using nutritional support using supplements.

Prostate cancer could be prevented by sticking to a diet low in saturated fats. Soy bean products have shown to inhibit the production of testosterone. Lycopene-rich products, Selenium and Vitamin E have also shown tumor retarding effects.
