Radiation

Radiation is a specific type of energy used to treat cancerous cells and tumors. The aim of radiation is to destroy cancer cells and shrink tumors. Radiation destroys these cells on a genetic level, making it impossible for them to continue to grow and divide. Radiation damages both cancer and healthy cells, but healthy cells are able to recover and function properly. Radiation is safe to administer on both children and adults.

There are different types of radiations and different techniques that are used to administer the treatment. For example, some radiation can be used on a small area without damaging nearby healthy cells, while others have to be used on a much larger area. Also, some radiations are used to destroy cancerous cells, while other are used to just shrink tumors and alleviate symptoms.

Radiation can be used with other cancer treatment such as chemotherapy or surgery. To prepare for radiation, patients are given a simulation where the treatment area is defined and marked. These marking should not be removed because it helps the doctors to find the treatment area easier when administering the treatment.

Radiation can be administered externally, internally, and systemically. The type of radiation used will depend on several factors, although external radiation is most commonly used. Factors that can influence the type of radiation used include the type of cancer present, location, the health of the patient and medical history. Radiation can be used to treat most solid tumors or cancers. It is also used in the treatment of leukemia and lymphoma.

Radiation therapy is painless, but has several side effects. Support is available for patients of radiation therapy
