Dealing With A Loss

Grief is a natural process, felt by everyone at some point in their life.  Everyone will at some time lose someone that they care about very much, be it a parent, child, spouse, or a close friend.  Although grief is a real feeling, often painful, it does not have to debilitate us.

In order to avoid the pain felt with grief, many will place themselves in a state of denial.  This can be extremely unhealthful.  Many will experience actual complications in regards to grief, including sleeplessness, loss of appetite, fatigue, irritability, and more.  Some may even resort to alcohol and drugs in order to deal with the pain and emptiness felt with the loss.  Others may lose interest in life itself, slipping into a state of extreme depression.  The grief process will take time to subside, often a year or more.  Shock is common after a loss, although to felt by everyone.  Feelings should be expressed, remembering that crying is not only acceptable, but often very helpful in emotional release.  One may find themselves breaking into tears at any time, unable to control your emotion.  Physical symptoms may also occur, including shortness of breath, nausea, and tightness in the chest or throat

People will often withdraw during the grieving process.  With a little effort, this can be overcome.  Although it is difficult to comprehend at this time life will become better in time.  One must accept the loss and allow time for the grieving process to occur.  Some may require more time than others for this to occur.  One must always remember that grief is natural in the process of life.
