Go on the Defensive: Prevent Metastasis from Spreading

Being diagnosed with a metastatic disease is a scary thing, but your attitude and approach to your diagnosis will make a huge difference when it comes to responding to treatment.  One of the most important things you can do is build up your body’s defenses against the spread of metastasis.

Recently published research supports the idea that the body may have metastatic “hot spots,” or areas that are predisposed to metastatic disease.  So what can you do?  Aside from talking to your doctor and getting information on what therapies are available to disrupt the movement of metastatic cells, you can also start the process toward ensuring that all your other body systems are in tip top shape.

Start by cleaning up your diet and adding cancer fighting foods and nutrients to your meals.  Phytonutrients (the nutrients found in broccoli and other leafy greens) have been shown to prevent the spread of metastatic cells. You may want to consider an increase in antioxidant intake as well; antioxidants can “neutralize” cell-destroying toxins.  Beverages like green tea can help increase the level of antioxidants in the body.  Adding organic food products to your diet may also help.  Organic foods are grown without any pesticides or man-made chemicals that have been proven to contain carcinogenic material.

In addition to researching natural ways to prevent the spread of your illness, you should also consider an increase in physical activity.  The benefits reported by patients who incorporate exercise into their routine are staggering.  Not only do they simply feel better, they are actively fighting the disease by improving overall health and stimulating the systems of the body that naturally eliminate toxins.

While your diagnosis may seem overwhelming, there are steps you can take to manage the hand you’ve been dealt.  Don’t allow yourself to feel helpless, because you’re not.  Take action and go on the defensive against the spread of your illness.  You know what they say, “the best offense is a strong defense.”
