Prosate Cancer

The prostate is a male reproductive organ, is a gland the size of a walnut and is located in front of the rectum and under the bladder.  The job of the prostate is to guard and cultivate the sperm cells.  Ninety-nine percent of all prostate cancer forms in the gland cells and is medically known as adenocarcinoma.  Other types of cancer that can develop in the prostate are known as sarcomas, small cell carcinomas, and transitional cell carcinomas, though these types are very uncommon.  A precancerous condition known as prostatic intraepithelial neoplasia, also referred to a PIN is believed to be the cause of prostate cancer.  Fortunately, most prostate cancer is found to be very slow in growth.  PIN is found in almost of half of all men by the age of 50.  Some men die of other diseases and are later found to have had prostate cancer that neither they nor their doctor knew was present.

Although there is no precise cause for prostate cancer, scientists have found that changes in the DNA may be a cause of prostate cancer.  Changes in the DNA that cause cells to grow, divide, or die off is believed to be a factor.  DNA cells grow and divide; anything that effects that change may be the cause of prostate cancer.

It may be possible to prevent some cases of prostate cancer but, because the exact cause is not identified, it is impossible to prevent a large amount of cases.  Restraining from foods with red meats that are high in fat or processed meats may help prevent prostate cancer.  It is also believed that eating foods with a plant source, fruits and vegetables, whole grain breads, cereals, rice, pasta and beans may promote a healthy system to prevent prostate cancer.
