News on Radiation Therapy

Radiation therapy is one of the primary forms of treatment used by cancer experts. The development of radiation techniques is continually changes to improve the treatment results in all types of cancers. Some of the newest techniques available are described below.

The Cancer Treatment Centers of America are now using a technique called Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT). It is being considered as one of the most significant breakthroughs in thirty years! This treatment concentrates on using higher doses of radiation in difficult treatment areas such as the major organs, head, and neck areas. While the radiation is able to be delivered in high doses, it still spares the surrounding good tissues from little or no harm.

Another advanced treatment is called High Dose Rate (HDR) Brachytherapy. This treatment is most often used as a quicker way to treat the site of the cancer tumor. This is an internal radiotherapy that places the radiation directly inside the tumor itself. This method of treatment is sometimes an alternative to removing the tumor or the organs affected by that tumor.

TheraSphere® is an innovative therapy used in the treatment of liver cancer tumors. Radiation is delivered through the use of glass beads called micro spheres. These micro spheres are filled with a radioactive material that is designed to target liver cancer. Instead of the typical chemotherapy or radiation for inoperable tumors, the TheraSphere® therapy is a new alternative that is done as an outpatient and may even be less toxic.

There are more treatments being worked on every day!
