Becoming a Grandmother

The very first time you hear the words "You are going to be a grandmother" is a moment that no one ever forgets. It is much like any major life changing event, you remember exactly where you were and what you were doing. For this reason, it used to be very common for the primer question: "Are you sitting down?" This is not the case so often anymore because the fear that our children have of traumatizing our old hearts is not nearly as relevant.

You see, the average age that a woman becomes a grandmother these days is 47. This of course blows many of our society’s preconceived notions of what a grandmother is out the window. Grandmothers are no longer elderly women with blue hair who bake cookies all day. Grandmother seems to hold a negative connotation for many women because of this societal imagery, and many women feel that they are simply not old enough to be a grandmother. Well, that mindset will actually make you a fantastic grandmother if you embrace it.

Becoming a grandmother no longer means that you are old and only useful in the kitchen, sharing wisdom and playing scrabble while watching the evening news. Although, you can still do those things, there is more that we can give to our grandchildren than our grandmothers gave to us. We live in an age of technology and a far greater understanding of the world around us. These are benefits beyond value for our grandchildren. We understand to a greater extent what the world can be and what the world is.

Becoming a grandmother is a wonderful event and one that should be embraced with joy. We are now afforded the opportunity to grow more as individuals and to help more individuals grow as well.
