Chemotherapy

Cancer is something that affects not only those afflicted with the disease, but everyone around them. Having a loved one suffer through this life-altering condition can be as traumatic for the family as it is for the patient. What's worse, one of the primary forms of treatment can be very physically, mentally, and emotionally taxing. It's important to follow your doctor's guidelines in caring for your loved one during this time, and to offer as much emotional support as you can.

One of the most important considerations for dealing with a chemotherapy patient is that the treatment often results in immunosuppression - a temporary lowering of the body's defenses against illness. Great care should be taken to keep your home disease-free. Antibacterial products can greatly reduce the amount of germs he or she is exposed to, and air filtration can help prevent respiratory infections. And most importantly, anyone with a cold or other communicable ailment should be kept far away from the patient.

Another consideration is the toll chemotherapy takes on the body, ranging from fatigue to nausea to hair loss. Often times, one undergoing this process will feel constantly miserable. It's important to be as supportive as possible, and to remember that no matter how unpleasant the process, its goal is a return to better health. Be understanding if your loved one shows symptoms of depression, and offer as much help as you can.

Cancer is a devastating illness. But these days, it doesn't necessarily have to be the final act, and with care you can help your loved one through their trials can make a substantial difference in their level of comfort and happiness.
